hmm..... if you go through your files, delete all of you junk. get all of you files in one place. that would be the safest way to keep them safe while changing your PC that is just advise, i dont know the answer to your main question

Is this an OEM hard drive? If not, then it is unlikely that you will need to reformat.

If you are putting an aftermarket board in you will have to re-format. If you do an exact replacement you should be OK. Also, If your thinking about upgrading your board, there are alot of things to watch out for. For example, if you have a Dell, HP, Gateway or othe major brand system, you CANNOT just go to Frys and buy a board and stick it in there. If you have a generic PC you chances are better to carry over components. You also have to be carefull of what type of CPU and memory and now days even hard drive you have. For example, there are different types of CPU's (AMD, INTEL) are the primaries. These can have a different pinnouts that cannot be interchanged. Hard Drives can be have a 40 pin flat ribbon cable or new ones are called SATA and have a different plug. Same situation on your memory(RAM) it can be various types of DDR, which may not be compatible on your new board.
Hope this helps!

Even installing an exact replacement you may find your OS and or applications wont work as BIOS may differ, an new MOBO is in fact a new Computer and is worth the small amount of time reinstalling your OS and applications as %99.9 of Computer builders do. So for a few more $ / £s go for a better chip set and with that you may want a better GPU, more RAM, better CPU etc staying static is using old tech and not much fun
